Through their studies and experiences they obtain the necessary research ability and knowledge for becoming leaders as core and specialized engineers. The curriculum is divided into six courses (Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering) for studying specialized and basic subjects, deepening specialization in the discipline. Around 90 percent of the students in the Department go on to graduate school, with those in the fields of electrical, communications, and electronic engineering and applied physics going to the Graduate School of Engineering, those in the information science field going to the Graduate School of Information Sciences, and those in the medical engineering field entering the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering. Why Choose Us? Tohoku University ranks first in Japan in number of academic papers in electrical and electronic engineering.* Researchers in our University have invented many innovative research accomplishments including the Yagi-Uda antenna, PIN diode, static induction transistor, optical communications (photodiode, semiconductor laser, optical fiber), tunnel magnetoresistive effect, perpendicular recording,** and perpendicular recording., which leads the world in electrical engineering, applied physics, and the fields of information science and medical engineering. These discoveries have enriched human life and created new facets to civilization. In spintronics, led by faculty members chosen among the top 30 researchers in Japan, and in many other fields, research is being carried out at the global forefront. In the well-equipped educational and research environments provided for conducting such studies, students join in with faculty members to engage in some of the world’s most leading-edge research, working closely also with the Research Institute of Electrical Communication and other related organizations in the University and with industry.*** In this way they are able to master the fundamentals required for working as world-leading researchers or engineers. Upon graduation, students go on to career paths in a variety of fields and industries where researchers and engineers with expertise in electrical and information engineering and the like are in demand. These include jobs not only with electrical manufacturers, power companies, and telecommunications companies, but also with car manufacturers, railway firms, as well as in the space industry and medical and welfare equipment industry, with their potential for future growth. *Totals for 2008-2012: Thomson Reuters research**A technology used in nearly all hard disk drives today***By taking part in the Step QI School program of the Department, students can participate in research in laboratories from their second year of study.
